#FoodBankChallengle takes a boost.

The Trussel Trust. The #FoodBankChallenge got a huge boost today, 26th May, thanks again to Hugh Grant, @HackedOffHugh.

Yesterday Airdrie Foodbank received an Asda delivery, which I had arranged with help from Hugh.

It was reported on @GlasgowLive and you can read the full article by clicking here.

Airdrie Foodbank Volunteer, Linda Murray told Glasgow Live : “We were completely gobsmacked. We wouldn’t have thought Hugh Grant would even think about a place like Airdrie!

There were a good few pallets full, but sadly we need more – referrals for our foodbank have shot up by 103 per cent over the last year.

We have more people coming to this foodbank than some of the ones in central Glasgow that get more donations.”

A Growing Trend

This mirrors figures recently released by the Trussel Trust showing an average 13% increase in referrals to their foodbanks. The gave out over 1.3 million emergency food parcels last year. Note: The Trussell Trust represent approximately 60% of foodbanks in the UK.

Areas were the Governments flagship Universal Credit, full service came into force, saw a 52% increase over 12 months.

If you’d like to join Hugh Grant and Gary Lineker in taking the challenge you can find your local foodbank by searching here at: Food Aid Network or The Trussell Trust.

Remember many local groups also run their own smaller operations and they need help too. Be sure to search online about your area to find out.

If you aren’t sure what to donate most foodbanks have contact details and can tell you what they need most.

Things always helpful though are:

  • Tinned food
  • Bread
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Toilet roll and toiletries
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Snacks

If you’re on Facebook you can search “#FoodBankChallenge” and find the event to share it with your friends and family.

Thank you to everyone who’s already donated. It will make a huge difference to those suffering from food poverty.

Have a great weekend.
